Many people only think about pest control when a problem becomes visible. For Roy Jenpire, prevention is just as important as treatment. As the founder of Termite Specialist Pte Ltd, he has built a business around educating property owners, solving problems at their source and protecting homes before costly damage occurs.

Rather than becoming another general pest control company, Roy chose a different path by specialising in termite management. Through expertise, technology and a strong focus on customer education, he has grown Termite Specialist into a trusted name in Singapore’s pest management industry.

What inspired you to start Termite Specialist, and what gap did you see in the pest control industry at the time?

I realised many property owners were dealing with pest problems without fully understanding how or why they happened.

When I started Termite Specialist, there were already many pest control companies in Singapore offering general pest management. I wanted to be different. During our first few years, we focused exclusively on termite control rather than every type of pest.

My goal was to build a company specialising in termite eradication, customer education and honest recommendations. For me, it is not just about eliminating pests. It is about protecting properties, giving clients peace of mind and helping them understand the root cause of the problem.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while growing Termite Specialist from a small operation into an established company?

One of the biggest challenges was building trust. As a new company, clients did not know our brand or whether we could deliver on our promises. Every customer and every job mattered.

Another challenge was building the right team. Pest control requires technical knowledge, discipline, honesty, communication and responsibility. As the company grew, I had to develop systems, train people and ensure consistent service quality.

Managing cash flow, manpower, operations, sales and customer service at the same time taught me that passion starts a business, but structure keeps it growing.

What are some common misconceptions homeowners have about pests?

One common misconception is that if you cannot see pests, there is no problem. Many people only call us after an infestation has become serious, when prevention would have been far more effective.

Another misconception is that spraying alone solves every pest problem. In reality, effective treatment depends on identifying the pest species, understanding its behaviour, locating entry points and addressing the source of the infestation.

How is technology changing the pest control industry today?

Technology is making pest control more accurate, efficient and transparent.

Today, we use tools such as thermal imaging, intelligent termite monitoring systems, digital reporting, scheduling software and data tracking to improve service quality.

For customers, this provides better visibility into what was found, what treatment was carried out and what follow-up is required. For pest control companies, technology improves operations, performance monitoring and response times. The industry is no longer driven by manpower alone, but by smarter systems and preventive solutions.

What lessons has entrepreneurship taught you about resilience and problem-solving?

Entrepreneurship has taught me that problems never stop coming. Once you solve one challenge, another appears. The key is to stay calm, break the problem down and focus on the next practical solution.

It has also taught me that resilience is not about appearing strong all the time. It is about continuing despite setbacks, whether it involves staff leaving, declining sales, customer complaints or operational challenges.

Every problem is feedback. If the same issue keeps recurring, it usually means the system needs to improve. That mindset has helped me grow as both a business owner and a leader.

What is one belief you held at the beginning that you eventually had to let go?

At the start, I believed that working hard was enough for success.

Over time, I realised that hard work alone is not sufficient. You also need systems, delegation, leadership, financial management, marketing and the right people around you.

I also learnt that I could not do everything myself. To grow the business, I had to build a strong team, establish clear processes and empower different departments to take ownership.

What is your vision for Singapore in the next five years?

I hope Singapore continues to raise the standard of pest management through greater emphasis on prevention, public education and technology.

As more buildings, construction projects and F&B outlets emerge, pest control needs to become proactive rather than reactive. I also hope more homeowners and businesses view pest management as an investment in protecting their property instead of waiting until problems arise.

If you could have a superpower for one day, what would it be and why?

People in the industry often call me “Ant-Man”, but if I could choose a superpower, it would be the ability to see through walls.

That would allow me to detect termite activity, hidden nests, water leaks and entry points instantly without damaging the property. It would save homeowners time, reduce stress and help us solve problems much faster.
