Meet Lucasz, a young musician who began busking at just 14, turning his passion for singing and guitar into real-world performance experience. What started as a simple suggestion from his father quickly became a journey of growth, courage, and self-discovery.

Today, Lucasz continues to balance school with his love for music, learning not just how to perform, but how to connect with people through his art. With each performance, he is building confidence, resilience, and a deeper understanding of what it means to share his passion with the world.

What made you decide to start busking on the streets at the age of 14?

My dad was the one who suggested that I start busking, to experience performing on the streets and share my music with a wider audience. It is also a great way to build my portfolio and understand how music works in a public setting, including how people react to the way I sing, play, and interact with them.

I have a strong passion for singing and playing the guitar, which I consider one of my strongest skills. Since I can play the guitar and sing at the same time, I thought, why not perform for others and share my passion with them, hoping they will enjoy it too.

What was your first busking experience like?

I started at a well-known location in Orchard, at Wisma Atria. When my dad suggested that I busk there, I felt very nervous because of the heavy foot traffic, and I did not think I was ready for that level of attention.

I was stressed and anxious, and it showed in my performance as my voice was not stable and I was shaking. However, the support from my family and friends, who were there that day, helped me feel more confident and less stressed.

Overall, it was a meaningful experience, and I learned a lot from it.

Busking at a young age takes a lot of courage. What has been the biggest challenge you have faced?

One of the biggest challenges I face is interacting with the audience. I can be shy at times, although I do not consider myself an introverted person. It takes time for me to get used to the environment and step out of my comfort zone.

I believe audience interaction is a key part of performing because it allows them to feel involved, rather than just watching. It also helps people understand me better and see that I can communicate and connect with them.

You are still a student. How do you balance school and music?

I can practise music anytime at home, but I usually busk during school holidays or weekends when I am free.

I also use a timetable to manage my time effectively. I prioritise my studies over music because education is important and plays a vital role in life. So far, I think I am managing both quite well.

If you could perform anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I would choose to perform in the United States. It is a large country with greater exposure and opportunities, allowing more people to discover your music.

Compared to Singapore, the United States offers the chance to learn from musicians of different backgrounds.

What would you say to other young people who want to start but feel scared?

I would say there is no need to rush, and it is never too early to start. Take small steps and progress gradually. With determination and hard work, you can overcome fear and challenges.

No matter your background, if you stay committed, you can achieve what you dream of.

What is your go-to song?

I would choose As Long As You Love Me by Backstreet Boys. It is a timeless classic that many people know, and it is a song that audiences can easily connect with.

How do you feel when the audience does not react positively to your performance?

I think it is perfectly fine because not everyone appreciates music in the same way. I prefer to focus on those who do enjoy and support what I do.

There will always be someone who appreciates your performance, whether it is music, dance, or any other form of expression.

If you could have a superpower for one day, what would it be and why?

I would choose teleportation. It would allow me to travel the world instantly and experience different cultures and seasons.

I believe travelling is an important part of life and I hope to visit as many places as I can.
