Meet Kangie, a specialist in online math tuition who has changed her approach to education by combining the best of both worlds—blending in-person classroom lessons with cutting-edge AI tools and personal growth coaching.
By embracing these innovative methods, she has created a dynamic learning environment that fosters both academic success and personal development, allowing students to thrive in their studies while growing in confidence and resilience. Her unique approach aims to empower students to not only excel in math but also in life.
What inspired you to start Learning Brews, and how did you decide to focus on mathematics and science?
I’ve always had a passion for mathematics since primary school and I’ve always excelled in it. I worked as an engineer for four years, but I felt my calling was teaching, where I could make a more significant impact. I decided to open a tuition centre in 2011 located in Ang Mo Kio. Due to rising rental costs, I had to close it and moved back home.
Despite being comfortable with online teaching, I decided to restart a tuition centre. In 2021, I became active on TikTok, offering free math lessons through live streams. Many leads came from TikTok, but most parents (about 70%) still prefer physical lessons. To avoid losing these leads, I decided to open a tuition centre.
In 2024, I got certified as a life coach, which equips me with structured skills to better help students transform their thinking. I decided to include science because I met excellent science teachers who joined my team.
How do you ensure your teaching methods cater to the varying needs of students with different learning abilities?
I meticulously track every student’s progress. It’s like consulting a doctor—I diagnose their weak areas, then prescribe the right “medication.” This process has always been manual, which limits scalability. In 2024, I began exploring AI tools like ChatGPT to enhance my system.
I’m also attending a course at SMU to learn about AI applications. My goal is to integrate AI into my tracking system to make it more systematic and scalable. This way, other teachers can also use this system to replicate what I do, ensuring each student receives personalised attention.
What strategies do you use to make challenging math concepts easier for students to grasp?
I explain concepts in very simple, layman terms with clear, easy-to-follow steps. My engineering background plays a role here. As a test engineer, I used to troubleshoot circuit boards, identifying faults and solving issues systematically. I apply the same logic to teaching math—breaking down problems into digestible steps.
I also anticipate common mistakes students make and address them in my lessons. Based on past feedback, students often understand the concepts just by watching my videos without needing to ask further questions. My strategy is to simplify everything, making it as easy as ABC.
How has conducting online math classes expanded your reach compared to physical classes, and what challenges do you face with online teaching?
Online teaching has significantly expanded my reach. Previously, my students were limited to nearby areas like Serangoon and Ang Mo Kio. Now, I have students from all over Singapore, including Jurong and town areas. I even tutor international students, such as IB students, and I’ve taken the IGCSE exam to familiarise myself with different curriculums.
However, the challenge lies in convincing parents to embrace online tutoring. Many had bad experiences with online classes during the pandemic, which made them skeptical. I address this by sharing video testimonials from my students and encouraging parents to try a few lessons. Most find my online tutoring different and effective once they experience it.

Many students know how to solve problems but underperform in exams due to negative thoughts. I help them identify these “monkey thoughts” and replace them with positive ones.
What feedback have you received from students or parents about the impact of your tuition centre on their academic performance?
I have over 20 video testimonials from parents and students. A common feedback is that “Teacher Kangie is more than just a teacher.” Many parents appreciate how I connect with students on a deeper level, addressing their mindset and environment. Often, poor academic performance stems from a lack of motivation or negative attitudes.
By bonding with my students and understanding their challenges, I help them transform their mindset. For example, I teach them that struggling with new topics is normal and not a reason to give up. Parents have noted that this approach instills resilience and a more positive attitude toward learning.
You mentioned being a certified life coach. How does life coaching help students in their mental and personal growth?
One core principle I learned from my life coach, Daniel Lim, is the impact of our thoughts on our actions. Many students know how to solve problems but underperform in exams due to negative thoughts. I help them identify these “monkey thoughts” and replace them with positive ones.
For example, I teach them to focus on doing their best rather than succumbing to pressure. Changing their mindset often leads to better performance and greater confidence.
What are your future plans for your tuition centre, and do you envision expanding into more subjects?
Over the years, students have also asked me to teach other subjects like JC math and physics. My plan is to expand gradually, applying the same personalised approach to other subjects, such as English and humanities.
However, I want to ensure my system is solid and scalable before expanding. I’m leveraging AI to systemise my tracking and teaching methods. Beyond academics, I’m also considering offering courses on AI and other skills for adults and teenagers. My long-term goal is to create a comprehensive, tech-driven learning environment.
Where do you see yourself and what’s your vision for Singapore in the next five years?
I see myself leading my two brands to the next level. I see Math Coffee expanding online tuition services to cover a wider geographical area, and maybe even internationally. I also would like Learning Brews School to become known as a school that stands out from traditional tuition centres, offering unique learning experiences that other tuition centres don’t provide.
As for my vision for Singapore, I hope to see a society where education is not just about grades but about building resilience, cultivating a positive mindset, and nurturing future leaders with strong values.
I envision a community where students are inspired to achieve their potential, and parents and educators collaborate closely to create a supportive environment.
