Meet Sharlyn, an entrepreneur who achieved financial freedom in her 30s not through luck, but through relentless discipline, systems thinking, and the courage to evolve with change. From building a personal branding business to scaling her AI-driven digital agency YouMedia, her journey reflects both grit and strategic clarity.

Today, Sharlyn operates at the intersection of technology and human connection. As a founder, investor, and speaker, she helps businesses navigate the rapidly changing AI landscape while emphasising that long-term success is not about hype, but about consistency, adaptability, and building systems that last.

You achieved financial freedom in your 30s through building multiple businesses. What was the hardest phase of your journey that most people do not see?

The hardest phase is balancing effort with sustainability. Anyone can hustle for a short sprint, but building systems, hiring people, and letting go of control is much harder. There were periods where I was hosting events late into the night, then working on AI and digital marketing strategies until 2 or 3 a.m.

People only see the polished side, but financial freedom is really about discipline and showing up consistently every day.

Many founders have ideas but struggle to scale. What separates builders from dreamers?

Dreamers wait for the perfect moment, but it never comes. Builders take action, launch quickly, and iterate fast. They also think in systems. Dreamers build around themselves, while builders create businesses that can run without them. At our agency, we focus heavily on processes and accountability to ensure consistent results for clients.

You now run an AI powered SEO and digital marketing company. How is AI fundamentally changing the way businesses grow today?

We are in the biggest shift in search behaviour since Google was launched. People are no longer just searching, they are asking AI platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others. If your business does not appear in these AI generated responses, you are already invisible to part of your market.

We combine traditional SEO with Answer Engine Optimisation and Generative Engine Optimisation to ensure businesses are visible across all channels. Beyond visibility, we are also helping companies deploy AI agents to automate workflows, making operations leaner and smarter.

Your personal brand is your distribution channel. People trust what they see. Many clients come to us because they have seen me speak or deliver on stage. Personal branding builds trust at scale and helps answer key credibility questions before clients even make contact.

As an investor backing startups, what do you look out for first?

The founder always comes first. A strong founder can pivot and find opportunities even in a weak market, but a weak founder will struggle even in a strong one. I look for intellectual honesty, self awareness, and coachability.

After that, timing matters. An idea that failed years ago could succeed today because the market is finally ready.

You are also a speaker and emcee for high profile events. How important is personal branding for entrepreneurs?

It is no longer optional. Your personal brand is your distribution channel. People trust what they see. Many clients come to us because they have seen me speak or deliver on stage.

Personal branding builds trust at scale and helps answer key credibility questions before clients even make contact.

What makes you stay committed to your current project?

I see a clear gap between where businesses are today and where they need to be in the next two years, especially with AI. That gap excites me. Every day, I am learning, testing, and applying new developments.

At the same time, working in events reminds me that human connection remains irreplaceable. Being able to operate at both ends, technology and humanity, is something I value deeply.

What is your vision for Singapore in the next five years?

Singapore has the potential to become a leading AI business hub in Southeast Asia. The infrastructure and talent are already here. What we need is a stronger culture of digital experimentation. Businesses must adapt quickly, because the cost of waiting is high. Early movers will have a significant advantage.

If you could have a superpower for one day, what would it be and why?

I would want the ability to read minds, not to manipulate, but to truly understand what people need. As an emcee and business owner, a lot of time is spent interpreting unspoken signals. Having that clarity would allow me to serve people at a much deeper level.
