Meet Dr. Sivananthan. His journey into medicine was shaped not only by a passion for healing, but also by an entrepreneurial spirit. From an early stage, he envisioned building a practice where clinical care and business ownership could work hand in hand, allowing him to serve patients while shaping a healthcare environment centred on accessibility and trust.

Today, as the founder of his own private GP clinic based in Malacca, Dr. Sivananthan stands at the frontline of community healthcare. He believes that general practitioners play a critical role in guiding patients through an increasingly complex medical landscape, while encouraging preventive care that helps people stay healthier in the long run.

What inspired you to become a doctor and eventually start your own private clinic?

My inspiration came from two motivations that developed side by side. One was my desire to become a doctor and help people manage their health. The other was my interest in entrepreneurship.

Over time, I realised that starting my own clinic would allow me to combine both passions. Running a private practice enables me to care for patients directly while also building a healthcare environment that reflects my values and approach to medicine.

Why do you think general practitioners play such an important role in the healthcare system?

The general practitioner is essentially the gatekeeper of the healthcare ecosystem. GPs are often the first point of contact for patients and are able to manage a wide range of conditions across multiple specialties.

By providing early assessment and treatment, we help guide patients towards the right care pathways and reduce unnecessary strain on specialist services and hospitals.

What are the most common health issues you see among patients today?

As technology and lifestyles evolve, diseases have also changed in many ways. What used to be simple conditions such as coughs and fevers can now present in more complex forms.

However, one of the most significant health concerns today remains non communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. These chronic conditions are increasingly common and require long term management, making early detection and lifestyle awareness extremely important.

Earlier in my career, I believed success meant being financially wealthy. Over time, I realised that true success is having quality time.

Many people neglect preventive care. What simple health habits would you encourage everyone to adopt?

In today’s society, the concept of prevention sometimes feels distant or abstract, yet it is one of the most important pillars of healthcare. Instead of focusing only on the disease itself, people should understand the complications that arise when conditions are left untreated.

When patients realise the long term impact of illnesses such as diabetes or hypertension, they are often more motivated to adopt healthier habits. Simple measures such as regular health screenings, balanced nutrition, exercise, and proper rest can go a long way in preventing serious complications later in life.

What are some common misconceptions people have about skin or dermatological conditions?

Many skin conditions are often assumed to be dermatitis or eczema unless proven otherwise. This misconception can create a barrier to accurate diagnosis and treatment.

In reality, dermatological conditions can vary widely, and different skin problems require different approaches. Having a basic understanding of common skin ailments can help patients seek appropriate treatment earlier and improve outcomes.

What are the biggest challenges of running a private GP clinic today?

One of the biggest challenges is managing the business side of the clinic. Doctors are trained extensively to diagnose and treat diseases, but we are rarely trained in areas such as business management, accounting, and operations.

Running a clinic requires balancing both the medical and administrative aspects of the practice, which can be challenging but also rewarding when done well.

What belief did you once have about success that you later realised was completely wrong?

Earlier in my career, I believed success meant being financially wealthy. Over time, I realised that true success is having quality time.

Being able to spend time with family, go on holidays, and enjoy meaningful moments with friends ultimately brings greater fulfilment than simply accumulating wealth.

If you could have a superpower for one day, what would it be and why?

I have always imagined having the power to travel back in time to change certain things. However, life itself is a learning journey, and every experience shapes who we become. In many ways, those lessons cannot and should not be undone.
